Week 9 Location Drawing, The Hive

The maze book was very handy when location drawing as although it is small, it consists of plenty of pages. I enjoyed the sequencing of the book as it changes your view of each drawing depending on how it is opened. I feel that these are stronger than my river walk drawings as there is a wider range of perspective and wider use of materials.

Week 8 Location Drawing, River Walk

This week I aimed to use materials that suited the tone and characteristics of my chosen locations. I think soft pencil worked particularly well when trying to present my more peaceful, quieter locations, whereas charcoal was useful when working on brickwork and creating gestural markings for busy areas. In future I would use a wider range of materials and apply colour when location drawing.

Week 7

During my final life drawing session I really tried to focus on the key components I have learnt over the module. As my time scale was slightly longer I spent more of my time planning and mapping out the body on my page. I feel that planning was one of my weaker areas at the start of the module as I did not necessarily achieve the best composition for my drawings effecting the scale and proportions of the model. In my opinion I feel that my final drawing from this session is one of my strongest.

Week 6 Life Drawing & Movement

This has been the most challenging life drawing method for me so far as the markings have to be made quickly. The lines are gestural representing a particular movement. I have produced multiple sketches to present the stages of the models movements. This meant working back over each drawing adding more gestural marks each time.

Week 5 3Dimensional Tone

I feel the use of tone has definitely added a three dimensional element to my work. My previous drawings have tended to appear quite flat, but by using black, white and a mid-tone I think the body has more shape. The use of tone also emphasises the areas of light and dark.

Week 4 Life Model, Animals & Birds

This has been my favourite method of life drawing so far. Using markings and rubbings help build texture when producing the animals surrounding the life model. I enjoyed working over my collages by either adding more markings or additional collage pieces. It was interesting to experiment with the scale of the animals against the model. Although not always realistic, the results produced worked well.

Week 3 Skeletons, Anatomy & the Gothic

This session has been very interesting as I have learnt a new technique known as wax resist drawing. I like the unpredictability of the marks produced as this is revealed once the drawing has been washed with ink. Composition was slightly more challenging as I had to focus on two figures rather than one. My proportions were not very accurate in my initial sketches of the day. This improved as the day went on, but feel this is something I could improve on. I think my charcoal tonal drawings are the strongest.

Week 2 Close Up Work: Expressive Hands & Portraits

I enjoyed focusing on the face and hands this session as I feel it is one of my weaker areas when life drawing. I think my use of tone when shading the face improved in my later sketches. Initially I found charcoal a challenging form of media to use, but this is now one of my preferred materials. The result of using this material in my work produced bold markings and presented a range of tone.
